Many of my small paintings – usually of little more than 10cm by 10cm – start out as preparations for larger works but very often I discover that what I am trying convey only really works on a very small scale. So often, I return to these small works or cut down much larger works, condensing, revising and re-working them until I am satisfied that they have merit beyond that of preliminary experiments and can stand on their own as small works of art.
Recently, alongside the larger works “Rehechos”, I have been sewing together very small fragments of paper sketches and fragments of experiments, the odds and ends of previous creative processes. There is something strangely satisfying and irresistible about threading together fragile scraps of paper which otherwise might have found their way to the bin or a dark corner of my studio.
